Future Self

Lyrics

I wrote a letter to myself when I was nine
Colored words without ‘c’s before ‘e’s before ‘i’s
A sealed envelope grants a safe passage through time
An unadulterated look from my innocent mind
Where did I think I’d be when I was twenty-five?
Good job, wife, dog, rich - sounds about right
But I didn’t expect to feel the music burning inside
Everyday regretting that I never gave it a try
Melodies trapped in my mind put stitches in my side
Try to free them with some rhymes and lyrics that I write
It’s a last ditch effort to take control of my life
If I could write myself back, I’d write to open my eyes

Future self, future self
Write me back, write me back now
Future self, future self
Write me back, write me back
Set my mind right

I read the wide-ruled thoughts scribbled between the lines
Amazed the dreams I sought were so well-defined
I wonder if nine-year-old me had someone ghost write
Spelling aside, it seems like something my teacher would like
They’re standing over my shoulder, maybe blocking my light
I move my paper over, closer to their old eyes
They make a few suggestions - more than no ‘e’s before ‘i’s
I write it down, wondering “how did they get so wise?”
Can’t you see little me as I start to slide
My letter in the envelope and lick to seal it tight
I hope the post stamp from my collection stays alright
I tell the post office deliver this to me when I am twenty-five

Future self, future self
Write me back, write me back now
Future self, future self
Write me back, write me back
Set my mind right

I wrote a letter to a boy who’s nine
He’s expecting one back and it’s late to arrive
Just for fun I write down a new song line
Future self, write me back
Set my mind right
